The best neighbourhoods for Dalhousie students
People talk about Dal like it's one campus. It's actually three, spread across Halifax, so the “best neighbourhood” really comes down to which one you walk to every morning. Here's how the options stack up.
Match the neighbourhood to your campus
Dalhousie has three Halifax campuses: Studley (arts, sciences, management), Sexton (engineering and architecture, downtown), and Carleton (medicine, dentistry, health). Figure out which one you're actually commuting to before you pick a spot. The Dalhousie housing guide breaks down each campus if you're not sure.
South End
The classic Dal choice. You're closest to Studley and Carleton here, and King's and SMU are an easy walk too. The catch is that everyone knows this, so it's the most competitive part of the city. Vacancy is the lowest of any Halifax neighbourhood and per-room prices carry the biggest premium. Start your search early. Seriously.
Spring Garden & Quinpool
Both are central, both are lively, and both keep Studley within walking distance without making downtown a hassle. Spring Garden works out to the shortest combined walk if your classes are split between campuses. Quinpool has more apartment stock and better restaurants. On price and convenience, this is the middle ground, and honestly a pretty comfortable one.
North End
If you're at Sexton downtown, live here. It's the closest neighbourhood to that campus, it has more character than the student-heavy South End, and it's generally cheaper. Transit coverage is good too. Most engineering and architecture students end up in this area, along with anyone who cares more about their budget than about having the shortest possible walk to Studley.
West End & Clayton Park
The budget play. Rooms cost less out here, but you're trading walking distance for a bus commute. If rent is the thing that decides it for you and the ride doesn't bother you, it's worth it.
What you'll pay
Most Dal student rooms run $700 to $1,200. South End rooms within walking distance of Studley sit at the top of that range, while North End and West End rooms come in cheaper. For context, the citywide one-bedroom average is about $1,539/month (CMHC, October 2025).
