Three campuses, one housing map
Dal is not one place. Where you should look depends on which campus you actually spend your days on:
- Studley: the main campus in the South End, off University Avenue. This is where most arts, science, and commerce students go, and it anchors the whole South End rental scene.
- Carleton: the health and medicine campus, a short walk north of Studley near the hospitals. Nursing, medicine, and health students often stay in the same South End blocks.
- Sexton: engineering and architecture, down near Spring Garden and Barrington. Sexton students sometimes trade the South End for downtown or the North End since it is a closer commute.
Where Dal students actually live
A lot of Dal students live in the South End, within a fifteen-minute walk of Studley. The streets that come up again and again:
- LeMarchant, Larch, and Jennings: the classic student blocks right beside campus. They fill up first because you can walk to a 9am in slippers.
- Coburg Road and Oxford: a step out from the core, a mix of apartments and older student houses, still an easy walk.
- Quinpool and the West End: a short bus or a longer walk, usually a bit cheaper, and close to the groceries and food on Quinpool Road.
- North End: better value and a good scene, a reliable bus down to campus. Popular with Sexton students and anyone priced out of the core South End.
- Dartmouth: the budget option if a bus across the bridge does not bother you.
What a room near Dal costs
Rent near Dal follows the same peninsula math as the rest of Halifax. CMHC's October 2025 survey puts the average Halifax 1-bedroom at $1,539 a month and a 3-bedroom or larger at $2,254, so sharing is the default. Split three ways, that 3-bedroom is about $750 each before utilities. The closer you get to LeMarchant and the campus gates, the more you pay. Getting to class without a car
You don't need a car near Dal. From the South End you walk to Studley and Carleton. From Quinpool, the North End or Dartmouth you take the bus. Sexton is downtown, so if that is your campus, a North End or downtown room can beat a South End one on commute. Check the route on Halifax Transit before you sign.
