How to find cheap student housing in Halifax
Rent in Halifax has climbed hard over the last few years, and the South End is the worst of it. But students still land affordable rooms every term. It comes down to which neighbourhood you pick, when you sign, and how many people you split with.
The cheapest neighbourhoods for students
The rule in Halifax is simple: the closer you walk to Dalhousie, Saint Mary's, and King's, the more you pay. Move a bus ride out and the rent drops fast.
- Clayton Park and Fairview. The go-to budget picks. Bigger buildings, more supply, and rooms that cost less than in the South End. The tradeoff is a 20 to 30 minute bus ride to campus.
- Bedford Highway. A long strip of apartment stock heading out of the city. Cheap for the space you get, and the closest budget option for Mount Saint Vincent students, who are already up that way.
- Dartmouth. Across the bridge, and usually the best value in the whole region. The ferry into downtown is quick and honestly a nicer commute than most bus routes. Worth it if your schedule is flexible.
- North End edges. Not as cheap as it used to be, but the blocks further from Gottingen still beat the South End, and you are close to Dal's Sexton campus.
The real ways students cut their rent
Neighbourhood is half of it. The other half is how you rent.

- Take a summer sublet. Students leaving for the summer often drop the price to get the room covered while they are gone. A May to August sublet is one of the cheapest ways to live in a good neighbourhood.
- Do not sign in the peak. The August scramble is when landlords have the most leverage. Lock something in during the winter, or grab a late opening in September once the rush clears.
- Sort utilities on day one. A cheap room with heat and power left off the lease can end up costing more than a slightly pricier all-in place. Get what is included in writing before you commit.
