Finding student housing in Newfoundland
Newfoundland has the lowest student rents in Atlantic Canada. Cheap doesn't mean easy, though. The hard part is finding something walkable to MUN before September fills up.
St. John's, around MUN
Everything orbits Memorial University's Elizabeth Avenue campus, with the Marine Institute right next door and CNA close by. Most students cluster in Pippy Park and Pleasantville since those are closest to campus, and the rest spread out across Churchill Square, Georgetown, downtown, and the Battery. Downtown and the Battery have more character, but you'll pay for it with a longer commute. A one-bedroom apartment averages about $1,064/month (CMHC, October 2025), which is one of the lowest provincial-capital rents in Canada, and a room on SubSwap usually runs $500 to $800. Corner Brook and Grenfell
MUN's Grenfell Campus sits on the west side of Corner Brook. The town's small enough that pretty much everywhere is a short drive from campus, but the densest student housing is around West Street and Broadway. Rents here tend to run even cheaper than St. John's.
A smaller, tighter market
The student population here is small and everyone seems to know someone. That doesn't make Kijiji safe, though, and growth in international enrolment has squeezed the inventory near MUN. Walkable rooms in Pippy Park and Pleasantville turn over fast. Verification matters just as much here as it does anywhere else, so read avoiding rental scams.
Start before September
