How to find a roommate in Ottawa as a student
Ottawa is a solid student city. It's cheaper than Toronto, transit is decent, and there are three big schools feeding the same rental market. Most students share a house or a unit with two or three others, and the trick is finding people whose habits match yours before the September rush.
Where students live
- Sandy Hill. Right beside uOttawa. Old houses split into student units. Busy, social, and the go to for first time off campus renters.
- The Glebe and Old Ottawa South. Close to Carleton and pretty, but rent is higher and rooms go fast.
- Centretown and the Byward Market. Central, walkable to uOttawa, with more apartment buildings than houses.
- Heron Gate, Carlington and the area around Algonquin. More affordable, especially for college students, but check the bus route before you sign.
The O-Train Line 2 runs right to Carleton, so living along it can be smarter than squeezing into the Glebe.
What a room costs
As a rough ballpark for fall 2026, a room in a shared house or apartment runs about $800 to $1,200 a month. Sandy Hill and the Glebe sit higher, and places a few bus stops out come in lower. Check current listings before you lock in a budget with someone.
Ontario lease basics
Most rentals in Ontario need to use the Ontario Standard Lease. A landlord can collect last month's rent as a deposit but can't charge a separate damage deposit. Get every roommate's name on the lease if you can, because if only one person signs, everyone else has less protection. Disputes go to the Landlord and Tenant Board.
Bilingual city, bilingual roommates
uOttawa is bilingual and lots of students come from Quebec, so you'll see ads in both languages. If you'd rather speak French at home, or want to practise, put that in your bio. It's a real compatibility thing and worth bringing up early.

Most live in Sandy Hill, which is right beside campus, or in Centretown and the Byward Market. Some go farther out to save money and take transit in.
