How to find a roommate in Calgary as a student

By the SubSwap team · Updated October 2026 · 6 min read

Calgary rent climbed fast over the last few years as people moved in from other provinces, and student budgets didn't keep up. Sharing a house or a basement suite is how most students handle it. The C-Train helps a lot, since it opens up neighbourhoods you'd never think of otherwise.

Where students live

What a room costs

As a rough ballpark for fall 2026, a room in a shared house or suite runs about $750 to $1,100 a month. Rooms near the Red Line and close to campus sit at the higher end. Check current listings before you set a budget, because Calgary has been moving quickly.

Alberta rules worth knowing

In Alberta, a security deposit can't be more than one month's rent, and the landlord has to keep it in a trust account and return it with interest. Do a written move in inspection, take photos, and keep a copy. Disputes go to the Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service. If you're renting a room in the owner's home, ask whether it's covered by the Residential Tenancies Act, because not every setup is.

Winter is a roommate issue too

Calgary winters mean heating bills, a car in the driveway, and shovelling. Talk about who handles the walk, how you split utilities in January, and whether anyone needs the parking spot. Small stuff, but it's exactly what roommates fight about. Our rent and bills guide helps.
